The Tarantul class corvette, R-32, the latest addition to the Egyptian Navy, being towed. The tow line is clearly visible at the right of the photo.

On 19 August 2015, the Russian tug SB-921 Paradoks, towed the Tarantul class missile corvette R-32 to Russia.

The corvette made headlines when she was handed over to Egyptian Navy on 10 August 2015. According to official statements the handing of the corvette was seen as a confirmation of the cooperation and strategic partnership between Egypt and Russia and within the framework of joint military cooperation between the two countries’ armed forces.

When she was towed the corvette R-32 was observed hoisting St Andrews, the ensign of Russian Navy instead of the Egyptian one. Also the crew appeared to be Russian.

The reason, why the corvette was being towed after 5 days Egypt announced it had taken delivery of the vessel, is not obvious from the outside. The smoke coming out of the stack of the corvette indicates that either the main machinery or the generators for electricity are working. If the main machinery is not faulty the problem may be in the reduction gear, shafts, propellers or rudders.

This incident shows that any foreign navy should check about the condition of the warship before accepting it from Russian Navy.

USS Porter in Black Sea, after clearing the passage through Istanbul Strait.

In, the last 4 days we have again witnessed an increased activity of warships passing through Turkish Straits.

On 1 July 2015 very late in the evening Spanish mine hunter passed though Bosphorus and deployed to Varna Bulgaria. She was in Erdek for the Change of Command Ceremony of NATO Mine Countermeasures Group Two . Unfortunately there is no photo of this passage available.

On 2 July 2015 the two Russian Ropuchas Alexander Otrakovski and Korolev returnd tothe Black Sea from their Syrian deployment.

On 4 July 2015, the Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 consisting of F-334 NRP D. Francisco de Almeida and F-803 HNLMS Tromp passed sneaked through Istanbul Strait. Their passage is covered here.

On 5 July 2015 the French intelligence gathering ship Dupuy De Lôme made her southbound passage. This was not expected as a NATO naval exercise is about to begin in the Black Sea. Thus this spy ship could be very handy in the Black Sea.

Later the same day US Navy destroyer DDG-78 USS Porter made her north bound transit through the Turkish Straits. She is taking part in the Bulgarian naval exercise Breeze 2015.

NATO Mine Countermeasures Group Two is not the only NATO naval task force deployed to Bulgaria this weekend.

On 4 July 2015 late in the night at 22.30 local time the SNMG-1 ships F-334 NRP D. Francisco de Almeida and F-803 HNLMS Tromp passed through Istanbul Strait. According to the publicly available information both ships have arrive at Varna port on 5 July 2015. They are going to take part in Breeze 2015 naval exercise.

Foreign warships do usually pass through the Turkish Straits in day light. The Montreux Convention orders only the submarines of Black Sea nations to pass through the Turkish Straits at day time. The transit passages of foreign warships through Turkish Straits must start in day time. The Convention does not openly regulates the ending of the transit passage of foreign warships. Never the less I must say that the timing of these warships was particular peculiar.

Both NRP D. Francisco de Almeida and F-803 HNLMS Tromp are actuality very beautiful Dutch ships (though the former is now under Portuguese flag) which do not need to hide themselves in the darkness of the night.

The word photography means writing with light. And as we all know the single largest and the most important source of light on earth is our sun. Thus photography is more fun when the sun is up. And the results are far more better.

But as you can see from the results day or night the ship spotters in Istanbul are ready to document the foreign warships passing through our beautiful city.
