We have saw an increased traffic in foreign warships on Bosphorus this weekend:

On Sunday the Ropucha class landing ship Yamal returned from her Mediterranean cruise.

On Saturday, the French intelligence gathering ship Dupuy de Lôme made her fourth northbound passage through the Bosphorus year to date. Sorry, I have no new image of her.

On Friday two Ropuchas, Kaliningrad and Novocharkassk plus one tug MB-304 made their northbound passages.

On Thursday the Udolay class destroyer Vice-Admiral Kulakov passed through the Turkish Straits. She is going to receive an overhaul in the new Russian town of Sevastopol. Unfortunately there are no photos of her passage.

Foreign Warship On Bosphorus (Part 24)

The US cruiser USS Vella Gulf returned to the Black Sea for the third time this year. Her second passage was almost one month earlier.

SNMCMG-2 In Istanbul

The resolution of the photo is not excellent but it is good enough to recognize the shapes of the warships of SNMCMG-2 making a port visit in Istanbul.

The NATO taskforce arrived,  on 23 July 2014 in Istanbul, after making port visits in Varna Bulgaria and Constanta Romania. While in Bulgaria, the task force took part in the Bulgarian led naval exercise Breeze 2014.

On 21 July 2014 two Russian Ropucha class large landing ships, Kaliningrad and Novocharkassk returned from their Syrian deployment.

Two days later on 23 July 2014 ships of the SNMCMG-2 left the Black Sea after taking part in the Bulgarian led naval exercise Breeze 2014. Interestingly the UK contribution to the SNMCMG-2, HMS Chiddingfold was not seen passing through the Bosphorus with the rest of the task force.

Breeze 2014 Naval Exercise

The Bulgarian Navy is hosting a nine day long naval exercise Breeze 2014.

The military exercise is to be held in the Western section of the Black Sea and is aimed at improving the tactical compatibility and collaboration among naval forces of the alliance’s member states.

Bulgaria’s port city of Burgas has peen picked to host the staff of the drills.

While Breeze 2014 is taking place, the staff of the Bulgarian Naval Forces will be certified for conformity of the level of planning independent operations to NATO criteria, according to the website pan.bg, specialized in defense issues.

The exercise, which ends July 13, starts amid stepped-up presence of alliance forces in the Black Sea over the Ukraine crisis and Russia’s decision to incorporate the Crimean peninsula in March this year.

Nusret 2013 Mine Warfare Exercise Starts Today

The Nusret 2013 mine warfare exercise organised by Turkish Navy starts today in Çanakkale.

The exercise will end on 1 December 2013 and will be conducted in Saros Bay, east of Gallipoli peninsula.

According to Turkish Navy foreign participants are NATO mine warfare task force SNMCMG-2 and 1 mine hunter from Greece. From Turkish Navy one frigate, 4 mine hunters, 3 mine sweepers, 1 mine layer, 2 patrol boats, 1 mine retriever, 1 helicopter and one EOD team will participate. 3 patrol boats from the Turkish Coast Guards and planes from Turkish Air Force will also take part in the exercise.

The Participants Of Brilliant Mariner 2013

One of the NATO’s largest exercise Brilliant Mariner 2013 is continuing in the Mediterranean.

The exercise, which will end on 6 October 2013, will take place in the Tyrrhenian Sea between Sicily and Sardinia.

Over five thousand military and naval personnel from 12 NATO nations comprising Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany , Italy, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States will participate in this major annual exercise.

25 warships, including one aircraft carrier, 12 frigates, one amphibious warfare ship, one auxiliary ship and 7 mines countermeasures vessels will be involved, alongside a wide variety of aircraft, submarines and embarked marines. Two submarines and a Maritime Patrol Aircraft will also take part.

Brilliant Mariner 2013

Between 26 September and 6 October 2013, a large fleet of warships from NATO’s Response Force (NRF) and from other task forces will take part in Brilliant Mariner 2013 maritime exercise in the Mediterranean Sea.

According to Turkish Navy F-246 the frigate TCG Salihreis, the mine hunter M-264 TCG Erdemli and the submarine S-358 TCG Çanakkale are going to take part in this exercise.

TCG Salihreis is the Turkish contribution to the NATO’s SNMG-2 task force and TCG Erdemli is part of the NATO’s SNMCMG-2. This means that the Gür class submarine TCG Çanakkale, is the only Turkish national participant to the exercise.
