>Turkey takes command of CTF-151

> On 3rd May 2009, the command of CTF-151 established January 2009, was transferred to Turkish Navy. Turkey will be the second nation to command the counter piracy task force.

In a ceremony held in Manama, Bahrain, Rear Adm. Caner Bener relieved Rear Adm. Michelle Howard as commander.

“As I take command, I would like to emphasize that CTF-151 will continue its
critical contribution to regional maritime security and lawful maritime order,”
said Bener. “Obviously, it will take time, passion and perseverance, but I
believe that during my command our sincere efforts will aide in achieving the
goals and objectives of the task force and will bring more stability and peace
to the region.”

The pirates are noticeably active in the last few weeks. They are not limiting themselves to the confined waters of the Gulf of Aden. Reports of hijacks or suspicious approaches from the waters off the Seychelles are increasing.

Turkey’s, current non-permanent seat in the Security Council, and newly appointed foreign minister, Ahmet Davutoğlu and his personal focus on the Middle East and surrounding areas will make this command and interesting one.
