>Turkish Navy rejects additional Perry class frigates

>Last week it was just an unconfirmed rumor but now it is official. Turkish Navy will not take two Perry class frigates offered by USA.

These two ships FFG-12 USS George Phillip and FFG-14 USS Sides are just not lucky. FFG-12 was offered first to Bahrain (Transfer of Naval Vessels Act of 2003) then to Portugal (Transfer of Naval Vessels Act of 2006) and finally to Turkey (Transfer of Naval Vessels Act of 2007).
FFG-14 was offered to Portugal ( Transfer of Naval Vessels Act of 2003 and 2006) and to Turkey (Transfer of Naval Vessels Act of 2007).

It seemed that Turkish Navy was going to accept this offer in order to maintain its frigate force, as older Knox class ships were taken out of the service.

It turned out that the actual cost of the reactivation these ships, which have been in mothballed state for the last 4 years would be much higher that initially calculated. Turkish Navy modernized its Perry class ships extensively as explained here. USS George Phillip and USS Sides needed to undergo similar modernization programs as well. And the cost of these must be added to the cost of activating and operating these ships.

If Pakistani Navy accepts FFG-8 USS McInnerney offered by USA (Transfer of Naval Vessels Act of 2008) and finds her up to their expectations USS George Phillip and USS Sides may be transferred to Pakistan as well. Otherwise it is likely that frigates are going to end up as a artificial reef off the coast of USA.

    >I find this fascinating, do you mind if I ask what source this came from? Furthermore do you know if Turkey would be interested in other ships if they were ‘hot swapped’ straight from US service thus negating reactivation costs?

    >The source for this story is the Turkish daily Hürriyet.I personally do not think that USN has anything to offer for hot swap. The Spruance’s are all gone, all Perry’s are castrated. Do you think that USN would give a AEGIS equipped ship to Turkish Navy?

    >Certainly not a VLS equipped ship.
