>USS Barry ran aground in Samsun

US Destroyer USS Barry DDG-52 ran aground at Samsun harbour this morning according to Sabah Newspaper.

Apparently the entrance of the harbor was shallower than indicated in the charts thus causing the ship to sit upon a sandbank.

Turkish naval special forces teams were send to survey the damage and to secure the ship from any possible hostile action.
The work is continuing to save the ship.
USS Barry entered Black Sea on 15th October. She was in Georgia between 19th and 22nd October.
I personally feel sorry for the commander of the ship Commander Douglas L. Edson. The recent years US Navy terminated carriers of many commanding officers for minor mistakes. Thus Commander Edson’s career may also have ran aground in Samsun.
Update: The ship was freed after a couple of hours. There is no damage ship’s underside, its propellers and rudders.

    >I feel sorry for the commander as well… and i feel sorry for my son who is on that ship. I wont see his handsome face til late to mid winter. These men sacrifice ALOT and eat food that sometimes isnt exactly the best and not alot of choices. They live in VERY claustropic conditions and work very long shifts at watch. About 500 sailors are crammed aboard this ship, doing a job most of us dont want to do.And cant talk to their family about what it is they do. We back here in the States are left to wonder and are grateful for any correspondence we can get from them. God Bless all the sailors.

    >My brother is also on the ship so I feel for him and every one of the other sailors and captain.

    >Acutally, this class of ship only berths about 325-350 sailors. If they ran aground in a harbor then it probably wasn’t in much danger of sinking – I would however bet that the sonar dome is completely out of commission. CDR Edson’s career may end because of this. You can bet whoever had the conn at the time is going to get splattered too.

    >Only 253 onboard the Barry these days b/c of budget cuts. No damage to ship (not even the sonar dome) or Edson's career, I'm happy to report. Yes, they all sacrafice a great deal and we wish them all the best!
