Comments:

The first batch of three ships was handed over to the Turkish Navy on 12 January 1998. The first ship sailed to Turkey and arrived in March 1998. Since then these ships have received a number of major upgrades and changes.

  • First, these ships were the short hull version prior their transfer as they were operating SH-2 Seasprite helicopters in USN service. The flight decks were extended and ASIST Helicopter landing aid was integrated by Istanbul Naval Shipyard so that these ships can operate the  S-70-B2 Seahawk helicopters.
  • Second, with the implementation of GENESIS combat management system modernization program, these ships received a fully integrated weapons control capability featuring enhanced tracking capacity, automatic threat detection and improved tactical data links.

  • Last, four ships of this class F-491 TCG GiresunF495 TCG Gediz, F-496 TCG Gökova, F-497 TCG Göksu,  are going to receive 8 cell Mk41 vertical launcher system in addition the existing Mk13 launcher and a new Thales SMART-S Mk2 3D radar instead of the AN/SPS-49(V)4 radar. The Mk92 STIR Mod2 fire control system of these four ships will be upgraded to Mod12 level.

Since their commissioning in Turkish Navy the Gabya class frigates have become the workhorse of the force. All of them were send at least for one period to the  Gulf of Aden to combat piracy off the coast of Somalia.
