Today as a happy coincident I was able to watch the arrival of the Ticonderoga class cruiser CG-58 USS Philippine Sea in Istanbul. With my reliable and ever ready camera in my hand, I was able to take lots of photos. The ship is in town for a liberty call. I do not know how long she will stay here but I guess she will be here at least for 3 days.
The ship is not only armed against the enemy ballistic missiles. She was a variety of other weapons systems such as the Long Range Acoustic Device pictured below.
The old and reliable machine guns at the bow, the amidships and at the aft are supported by the Mk 38 Mod 2 gun system just at the end of the flight deck.
As always there are two Phalanx Mk 15 Mod 2 CIWS for the last defence. The ships soft kill systems SLQ-32V(3) jammers, Mk 36 SRBOC and Mk 56 Nulka decoy launchers are located around the CIWS, combining the hard and soft kill systems.
She carries only 4 anti-ship missiles instead of the standard load of 8. This shows that this ship’s primary missions are not against enemy ships.
I couldn’t name this surface search radar. The funnel caps have been modified and have lost the characteristically look of the Spruance and Ticonderoga class funnels.
The round equipment next to the twin machine gun is the LRAD “screamer” which sends out loud noises to deter suiciders or pirates. Don’t know if it has ever been used in service.
The ship looks beat up..
Yes she seems to be deployed for a long time.
Well, Obama has to save money now, can´t spend any cent on paint for navy ships anymore!
The ship is going to visit Sevastopol (Ukraine) 20-25 october
She has left Istanbul this morning. Send her photos from Sevastopol. ;-)
